What is Vortex, and what was my role in its creation?

Vortex is a third person ability shooter template, made for a game audio course that will exploit Unreal-Wwise integration, currently still in development. The game itself is complete, but still requires audio implementation. The game follows a simple cyberpunk-like story where the player has been hired to sabotage an evil corporation's facility. But to reach that, they first have to go through various grunts and robot-guards!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Used blueprint scripting to create all of the mechanics, abilities, weapon logic and movements in the game.

  • Designed each level.

  • Brainstormed and designed each ability and statistic behind all three characters

  • Brainstormed and designed the final boss and the grunts.

Why create Vortex?

Thanks to the creation of Helix, which gave me the technical knowledge on how to create games in Unreal Engine, and the friend gained through the Tranzfuser path, me and my team member responsible for audio design decided to create an audio course. This decision was made to enlarge our portfolios but also to possibly gain some additional income.

Gameplay

Vortex was fully developed in Unreal engine 5 by myself. It has been made fully with blueprints, and the visual props, which are all in the low-poly style, have been re-used from a previous project I worked on: Helix. Although very similar to Helix, Vortex is a project built from scratch, re-using some assets and ideas from Helix, but most importantly applying everything learned from Helix and improving on it.
